The Price of
Worship:
Our first Christmas in Nepal was fast approaching. Having done our research,
we knew what we were in for. |
 |
In Spite of the What-if’s:
Backpack
slung over his shoulder, Raymond, a blue collar factory worker, rides the
Singapore transit bus every day. All week long his routine is the same, broken
by moments when he tucks a few dollars in the envelope that stays in his
backpack. |
 |
Life after Death:
She was a mother six times
over. Six times she experienced the gut-wrenching pains of labor. Six times
she hoped; but every time her hopes were shattered and her heart broken. |
 |
Sleeping With the Enemy:
A few years ago and a few
mountains east of us, Kathmandu University began felling trees. The first
phase of a mammoth educational center to accommodate a kindergartener straight
through medical school.

 |
The Club: Ten
feet tall, it stands in my front lawn on a well worn patch of dirt,
symbolizing the differences between the worlds on either side of the fence.

sore irritation.

Heirs of the Kingdom:
Raging
against the caste system, Mahatma Gandhi said "I do not want to be reborn. But
if I have to be reborn, I should be born an untouchable, so that I may share
their sorrows, sufferings, and the affronts leveled at them, in order that I
may endeavor to free myself and them from that miserable condition."

 |
Jesus Among Other Gods: In
the end I leave Jesus among other gods.Having done so, I feel like a traitor,
betraying who I really am
|
 |
SDA Education: It’s a
Big deal!:
"Who
was in the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? Who saved the
three friends?" "Jesus!" 4-year-old Bir Singh, a Hindu student, shouts with
joy. Everyone else quickly follows. "It's Jesus! Jesus!"
|
 |
How About a Cup of Tea?:
"Where can I get a
cup of tea?" he asked, winking exaggeratedly. Must be a nervous twitch, I
thought as I pointed down the road |
 |
Taking Out the Trash:
The bulging files of yellowed, mildewed papers screamed for archival. So I sat
to sift and sort through stuff that went back more than 15 years. The more I
sorted, the more disgusted I became. Not with the dust and mildew, but with
the trash I found.

 |
What’s in a Name?:
His first day on the
job, Roy’s CEO-eye, with years of experience in the for-profit industry,
scanned this modest, not-at-all-for-profit, mission hospital, looking for its
"assets." |
