YVONNE GRAY, USA/CANADA
Kindergarten Teacher, Marathon Organizer, Physical
Therapist, Pathfinder Leader, Vespers Leader, Event Coordinator, Masseuse, A&P
Teacher, Guardian of Street Children, Recipient and Giver of Strange and
Unusual Gifts.
Joined Scheer in 2003. She’s technically not a long-term
missionary because she gets paid next to nothing. She’s technically not a
short-term volunteer either because she’s been here too long. Every time she’s
ready to leave, there’s a need she seems to fit perfectly. And we are glad!
Multi-talented, she's a "special" asset to Scheer--Even if she loses her keys
every other day and still has not learned to say NO when asked to lead in song
service (Yvonne has many spiritual gifts but singing is not one of them).
She says: "Living in Nepal has been the most
rewarding/controversial, bizarre/natural and exhilarating/frustrating
experience ever. It has challenged and taught me in ways nothing else ever
could--about God, about life, about me. If I had to pack again for the first
time I leave behind the M and M's, the extra jeans and the curling iron.
Instead I would have brought a copy of "Idiot's Guide to Spontaneous Living"
and "101 Ways to Eat Rice." I’d also bring DVDs of aerobic exercise—I’ve yet
to see someone leave this mountainous region looking leaner than when they
arrived!
"Personal growth is such a big deal back home--There are
unlimited seminars and books on the subject. For me, being taken out of
everything familiar to a place where basic survival takes priority over
self-discovery has given me a totally new perspective on personal growth.
Though I have light years to go... I never would be where I am without Scheer."
